One person has died following a single vehicle crash in the Western Bay of Plenty overnight.

The crash was reported shortly before 2am this morning and occurred on Work Road, Aongatete, says a police spokesperson.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing, says the spokesperson.

Another serious crash between a car and a truck occurred on State Highway 2 just before 7am this morning.

The road remains closed between Waihi Beach Road and Athenree Road.

The following diversions are in place:

Southbound: Left on Waihi Beach Road, right on Wilson Road, continue on Seaforth Road, right on Emerton Road, continue on Steele Road and Athenree Road, left on SH2. Northbound: the reverse.

The detour is not suitable for HMPV.
