Fatality after SH2 Athenree crash

UPDATED 11.56am: One person has died in the crash between a truck and car on State Highway 2, Athenree Gorge.

One person died at the scene and another person had moderate injuries, says a police spokesperson.

Police were alerted to the crash between Arden and Mathers Roads at around 6:37am, says the spokesperson.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing, they say.

A St John spokesperson says two ambulances and one helicopter were sent to the scene.

Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency is advising the road has reopened but some congestion remains in the area.

Motorists are advised to expect some delays, says a statement from NZTA.

EARLIER: Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash on State Highway 2 in the Athenree Gorge.

Police were alerted to the crash between a truck and car between Arden and Mathers Roads at around 6:37am, says a police spokesperson.

"State Highway 2 will be closed for some time while emergency services respond."

A St John spokesperson says one person was transported to Tauranga Hospital in a moderate condition.

She says two ambulances and one helicopter were sent to the scene.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible and to expect delays, says the police spokesperson.

Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency says SH2 is closed between Waihi Beach Road and Athenree Road.

The following diversions are in place:

Southbound: Left on Waihi Beach Road, right on Wilson Road, continue on Seaforth Road, right on Emerton Road, continue on Steele Road and Athenree Road, left on SH2. Northbound: the reverse.

The detour is not suitable for HMPV.

Please delay your journey or use an alternative route, says a statement from NZTA.
