A pedestrian has been seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Police were called to St John St, near the intersection with Duke St, about 12.45pm following reports of a crash involving a car and a pedestrian.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said one truck was sent to an incident in Opotiki about 1pm.

He said they were assisting ambulance services.

Traffic management is being put in place, police said, and motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible.
