She was dreading the 400m swim. She trained for the 10km bike and 4km run or walk – just not the swim.

But Tauranga's Michelle Steer was all smiles when she finished the 2015 Generation Homes Women's Triathlon this morning.

'I was dreading that swim,” says Michelle. 'I don't know how long it took me but I did better than I was expecting.”

Michelle was one of 491 competitors to compete in this morning's triathlon.

She has four children – so swim training got pushed down the priority list. But it didn't matter. This morning she threw herself into the deep end and completed the triathlon – swim and all.

'I was nervous at first, but now I feel pretty good,” says Michelle, who thought completing a triathlon was impossible in September. She weighed 164.4kg.

She set herself a goal of weighing 100kg by today – and she's done it. In fact she's 98kg.

'I set myself that goal in December and to achieve it I've had to lose 17kg.”

If only her late grandmother was here to see her complete the triathlon today.

'But I know she'll be proud of me,” says Michelle. 'She was my biggest supporter even before I got right into my weight loss, she noticed whenever I lost 100g.”

Michelle's next step is the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays on March 8. Completing a marathon was a joke back in September – but she'll be doing that too, in May.

'I feel a bit crazy,” says Michelle.
