Retailers unite to boost business

Central city retailers were united at a meeting on Monday night as they tried to formulate ways to boost the number of customers coming to the CBD, which has languished over the winter season.
About 35 retailers attended the meeting at Gambino's Fine Wines on Grey Street in central Tauranga.

See video below of a group of about 35 retailers meeting at Gambino's Fine Wines on Monday to discuss how to get people shopping in the CBD again.

Parking was the overwhelming concern expressed by many retailers but others stressed that was not the only issue facing retailers in the CBD.
Some retailers talked about being treated equal to other shopping centres and malls in the region.
The formation of a special committee was also touted and one retailer urged for an 'aggressive' and 'assertive' strategy to deal with council, but the core concern for most came back to parking.
Retailers, such as Maggie J Shoes owner Pamela Wilson, says the cost of parking and limited parking times are driving shoppers to other areas.
"The parking is dreadful," says Pamela.
"They (the council) are leaving the CBD to die."
Paper Plus owner Toby Tagg considers the cost of parking so prohibitive that he suggested retailers pay for shoppers' parking fees in the central city in order to entice them into the area.
Mainstreet Tauranga manager Kirby Weis was at the meeting and told retailers strategies of this kind were not an ideal option.
City Centre Action Group, which includes Creative Tauranga, Tourism BOP, Chamber of Commerce, Tauranga City Council, Tertiary Forum, Property Council, Priority One and Mainstreet Tauranga, is discussing parking initiatives to increase visitation to the CBD.
Kirby encouraged retailers to rally behind any recommendations that may come from the discussions.

Good on them

The main reason I do not go in to town now is the parking and the over vigorous application of time limits. So to me it does appear as though the CBD is still seen as a Cash Cow that needs to be milked until it runs dry... the only outcome of this mentality will be no shops in town and no customers. Parking needs to available in town with sensible time limits and pricing, not what we are seeing now.

Good on the retailers, lets face Mainstreet Organiser is just that, he is meant to organising what the shop owners want. It use to work in Hamilton years ago and why won\'t it work now. Shop owners are the ones hurting and Mainstreet Manger might hurt if his salary has to be reduced because shop keepers can not afford to pay. The CBD use to be a place to shop but at times it is dull dreary and lacking spark.

Danger

Danger, danger: retailers banding together and being proactive in taking ultimate responsibility for their own futures could render plodding \'leave it to us\' Mainstreet irrevelant. Whoop Whoop.

it,s the parking ....

Really feel for the retailers that are struggling in central Tauranga. For this shopper the guy employed with my rates wandering around looking like a fake police man handing out parking tickets keeps my car pointed out of town to hassle free parking and the same services in Bethlehem. The final straw for this customer was getting a parking ticket when in town paying my rates.. The decline of the C.B.D has other causal factors for sure but charging me for the privilege of parking in it is not doing anyone any favors.

Why put up with CBD shopping with a threat of parking fines when even though the street may be empty?

Needs to be more family friendly for people shopping with babies and young children, ie facilities for feeding, changing and toileting. I recently received disapproving looks from an older couple for breastfeeding my baby at a cafe, whereas Bayfair I have all I need in the Parents Room.

Shoppers Parking costs

I agree that the cost of parking and limited parking times are driving shoppers to other areas. The general view of my friends in the Katikati/Waihi area that travel to Tauranga Central to enjoy a day shopping is that the costs are \'unfriendly and too expensive\" Local shopping malls/centres with free parking are by far the more enjoyable experience. It is a great shame that the Council is damaging the Retailer\'s livelihood and damaging the reputation of Tauranga for future visitors. It is a shame as there are some beautiful shops in the Downtown area.

Arnt all the groups mentioned at the end of the artical there to do this sort of thing anyway? Was it the free wine and the prospect of more council funding that made 1/2 these groups show up. Should we all do back flips over the fact Pro 1 CC and mainstreet were there , Waley Wakey People Thats what they do The question is not why they are there now ......Its where were they before ?

Well done retailers

I would like to congratulate the retaillers for organising this get together - this is EXACTLY how they will all benefit and prosper. The CBD is only the CBD because of THEM - NOT because of the COUNCIL. First of all they should wrestle control of the parking away from the council. Failing that, they could perhaps employ some parking meter ANGELS to walk around 1 step behind the Parking NAZIS, and make what they do completely unproductive (which it already is - perhaps I should say unprofitable!) These nasty people need to GO ASAP I have been overseas, where a market is held in the main street of town every single week which attracts huge crowds. People attract people, some of which may use the shops - more people will make the place a buzzing place to go instead of a ghost town. It is the retailers who will make the town work again, NOT the council - they are the REASON it is a ghost town now, and no amount of investigating or consultancies will fix it - all it will do is give another useless bureaucrat a a reason to exist, and ensure your rates go up again.
