The New Zealand Under 20 side have concluded their IRB Junior World Championship preparations in style, easing past the Chiefs Development side 47-19 at Blake Park.
As part of the ‘Baby Blacks' week long pre-tournament camp in Mount Maunganui the two sides clashed following the Under20's loss to the Blues Development last week.
The match saw a number of Bay of Plenty players in action including Joe Royal, Beau Williams, Elijah Nicholas and Tino Nemani all in the Chiefs starting side while Te Aihe Toma, Dan Hollinshead and Leroy Van Dam made appearances from the bench.
Bay of Plenty and Chiefs loosie Carl Axtens captained the side from No.8, joined by Chiefs' player Robbie Fruean getting some game time under his belt following a heart procedure.
The hit out is the final chance for Under 20 coach Chris Boyd to get a final look at his players and combinations before their first world cup match with Samoa on June 2 in Auckland.
Boyd has an abundance of provincial and Super Rugby talent on hand, led by captain Blues first five eighth Simon Hickey but needs to carefully balance this in a tilt to end a two year championship drought after winning the event between 2008 and 2011.
Hickey is by Crusaders Mitchell Drummond, Blues Tevita Li and Chiefs Anton Lienert-Brown, while Canterbury's Richard Mo'unga and Otago's Josh Renton both have a taste of ITM Cup.
The side is also chasing a part of impressive rugby history, needing to lift this year's IRB trophy to help secure a full New Zealand Rugby cabinet alongside the All Blacks, Black Ferns, Men's and Women's Rugby Sevens, and secondary schools title success.
Bay of Plenty's Troy Callander started the game at lock for the Under 20's, after playing a number of matches for the Chiefs Development this season.
