‘Baby Blacks’ hit the Mount

New Zealand Rugby's tilt for a full global trophy cabinet continues in Mount Maunganui this week with the NZ Under 20's putting together the final touches to the IRB Junior World Championship campaign.

Based at the Mount until next Thursday, the 28-strong side is using Blake Park for its pre-tournament camp before its first world cup match with Samoa on June 2 in Auckland.

The side is also chasing a part of impressive rugby history, needing to lift this year's IRB trophy to help secure a full New Zealand Rugby cabinet alongside the All Blacks, Black Ferns, Men's and Women's Rugby Sevens, and secondary schools title success.

To do so the side, nicknamed the ‘Baby Blacks', must end a two year championship drought after winning the event between 2008 and 2011, before falling short to South Africa and England in recent years.

But one player not feeling the added pressure is Greerton Marist lock Troy Callander – Bay of Plenty's sole representative.

'I think everyone thinks it's a bit of an honour to represent your country even if there wasn't any history,” says Callander.

'We are sort of looking at it as ‘pressure is privilege' going into the games. We are going to invite it in and embrace it.”

Seen by the coaching staff primarily as a lock, Callander is looking to impress during upcoming trial matches with the Blues and Chiefs Development sides, vital to securing starting positions.

With a shoulder injury ruling him out of contention three weeks before the 2013 Bay of Plenty Steamers side was named, the former NZ Secondary Schools player feels he is timing his run to perfection ahead of the junior showpiece.

'I'm feeling pretty fresh and hope I can go out there and perform.

'I have had two games for the Chiefs Development against the Hurricanes and Blues so I sort of know what to expect. It's definitely a lot more physical, but a lot of these guys have played these development games.”

NZ Under 20's coach Chris Boyd has an abundance of provincial and Super Rugby talent on hand, led by captain Blues first five eighth Simon Hickey.

He is backed by crusaders Mitchell Drummond, Blues Tevita Li and Chiefs Anton Lienert-Brown, while Canterbury's Richard Mo'unga and Otago's Josh Renton both have a taste of ITM Cup.

'We think Simon will provide some great leadership for the team given his experience both on the field and in this team environment,” says Boyd.

'We expect to play a traditional New Zealand style of rugby – high tempo and expansive style of rugby.”

The NZ Under 20 side plays the Blues Development at Blake Park this Friday at 2pm before the Chiefs Development next Wednesday at the same venue at 2pm.
