Last minute cancellations and alterations for this weekend's events are flooding in as Tauranga braces itself for Tropical Cyclone Lusi's impending arrival.
Meteorologists are now predicting the eye of the storm to track down the west coast of the country, but the Bay of Plenty is still expected to see near gale force winds and heavy rain throughout the weekend.
The Ulysses Motorcycle Club Annual Tauranga Hospital Easter Egg and Toy Run is one of the events cancelled due to weather conditions.
Friday, March 14:
Tonight's season finale of the Night Owl Cinema will now feature indoors at the Historic Village Hall instead of the Tauranga waterfront, beginning at 6pm.
The film ‘Carving the Future', featured as part of a Sustainable Backyards Month, will screen from 7.30pm, powered by viewers on bikes.
The Black Sticks' third match against Japan will now go ahead tonight, beginning at Blake Park at 5.30pm.
The match was scheduled for Saturday night but organisers moved the game forward to avoid a possible wet weather cancellation.
Further north, Katikati Volunteer Fire Brigade's annual family fishing competition, set to take place tonight and on Saturday has been postponed to next weekend.
Saturday, March 15:
The Amazing City Race, organised by Tauranga City councillor Catherine Stewart, is postponed until Saturday, March 22. Anyone with questions can contact Catherine by emailing [email protected]
The Mount Beach Bald is moving location, to be held at the Mount Action Centre instead of its usual spot outside Mount Maunganui Surf Club.
Organiser Delwynne Hahunga says while it's disappointing, she wishes to thank Tauranga Rotary for sharing the location.
The third annual event is from 11am, with 22 people registered to shave their heads so far.
The Tauranga Multicultural Festival at Historic Village is being postponed until next month. The Tauranga Regional Multicultural Council advised the 15th annual festival will now be on April 5.
A Have a Go Day for disabled surfers at Omanu Beach has been cancelled.
ASB Baypark is pulling the plug on its scheduled speedway meet for Saturday – postponing it to a week later on March 22.
Baypark apologises for any inconvenience this has caused.
Sunday, March 16:
The Junior Tiger Golf Tournament to be held at the Tauranga Golf Club has been postponed until March 23, at 10am.
Both the Ulysses Motorcycle Club Annual Tauranga Hospital Easter Egg and Toy Run and the TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter open day, scheduled for Sunday, have been cancelled heading into the cyclone.
Riders were set to ride from Nikau Crescent, Mount Maunganui to the 17th Avenue carpark – coinciding with the rescue helicopter open day.
The open day was set to give children and adults a chance to see the rescue helicopter up close along with demonstrations by police's armed offenders and dog squads.
The cancellation now means the Clarke Street Car Park at Tauranga Hospital – which was to close for the events – returns to normal operation for all staff and visitor vehicles.
The Aotearoa Surf Film Festival screening of The Endless Summer at Mount Drury Reserve is postponed until next weekend.
The free outdoor screening run as part of the festival celebrations is now on Sunday, March 23.
Keep watching for further updates on events this weekend.
