Cyclist and car collision on Totara Street

Emergency services are reported to be on their way to the scene of a collision in Mount Maunganui.

Police received a report of a collision involving a cyclist and vehicle at the intersection of Triton Ave and Totara St just before 5pm.

"The southbound lane of Totara St was initially blocked and has now been clear," says a police spokesperson.

"There is limited information on injuries but ambulance has been requested."

A SunLive reader at the scene says there is a cyclist lying on Totara Street in the southbound lane with people gathered around helping while waiting for an ambulance.

"Traffic is moving very slowly and carefully. Another cyclist is nearby. Two cycles have been removed from the road and are lying on the grass verge on the corner of Triton Ave and Totara Street."

At the scene?

I can't say what I'd like to about cyclists in general... but I wish the cyclists well just the same.

Cycle track?

Isn't there a cycle track down Totara Street to keep the cyclists off the road? A game of Russian roulette if you choose to cycle on the road. Obviously didn't pay off.

Agreed, there needs to be more done than a bit of green paint on the road to protect cyclists, to many drivers out there are actively hostile towards people on bikes - Need separate lanes protected with a barrier (or a large buffer zone) to keep everyone safe

There sure is, more often than not it's blocked by cars and trucks who seem to consider the cycle lanes a parking bay. it's great for kids to might meander down the lane at 10kmph but it's not fit for purpose for a cyclist who will happily sit on 30-40kmph
