Lane switch planned for TEL

Preliminary work needed for the Pāpāmoa East interchange construction has started.

The interchange will connect neighbourhoods in Pāpāmoa East to the Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL) / State Highway 2.

Tauranga commission chair Anne Tolley says the interchange is much-needed and can't come soon enough.

'It will provide people living in Pāpāmoa East with a welcome alternative travel route, no matter what their destination," says Anne.

'The interchange also means we will have the road capacity to enable more housing and commercial development in the area, which is essential to support our growing city,” she says.

To keep construction workers, and travellers safe, traffic is currently reduced to one lane in each direction with a temporary speed limit of 50km/h through the work site.

From today, the flow of traffic will be switched across to the eastbound lanes.

The lane switch will occur around midnight to minimise the impact on traffic, says a statement from Tauranga City Council.

'When traveling through the work site, we ask drivers to stick to the 50km/h speed limit and refrain from engine braking.

'We appreciate the community's patience with this work.”

I note that another Toll road will now be disrupted for who knows how long. So what are we getting for the tolls we pay to use both these roads? Certainly not unimpeded travel or is it for the privilege of potholes, none or inferior lighting, and increased times to get to your destination?
