The cancellation of Australia's upcoming Twenty20 international series in New Zealand has had a knock-on impact for Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval – who have lost their upcoming T20 clash with the Netherlands as a consequence.

Australia were originally penciled in for a three-game series in March, but the relaxation of New Zealand's trans-Tasman border restrictions has not come in time and the tour has been cancelled.

The cancellation includes one game at Napier's McLean Park. In order to not leave the Hawke's Bay on a reduced international schedule, the Netherlands fixture booked for March 25 at the Bay Oval has now been moved to Napier.

The Bay Oval had previously hosted the New Year's Test match against Bangladesh, which the Blackcaps lost in a shock result.

"We thank New Zealand Cricket for making every effort to host the series but unfortunately it wasn't possible given the border restrictions and quarantine requirements,” says Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley.

NZC chief executive David White says the move to call off the tour was inevitable given the restrictions at the border.

'At the time we scheduled the visit there was a lot of hope that the trans-Tasman border would be open for those who met the right criteria,” says David.

'However, the advent of Omicron has, unfortunately, changed everything at the border, and has made it impossible for us to continue with the series.

'It's disappointing - but we know it's the same for businesses and individuals and other sports, and we're grateful for the international schedule we have.”

The Bay Oval is still due to host the opening game of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup on March 4 with plans on how to accommodate fans under the red light setting of the Covid-19 Protection Framework still ongoing.

The venue is scheduled to host a total of seven games in the tournament, including the derby fixture between India and Pakistan.
