UPDATE 11.07AM: A burst sewer main is causing traffic delays in the Matapihi area today.

A left lane closure is currently in place on Matapihi Road near the Bayfair roundabout, says Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

'Motorists are still able to travel in all directions from Matapihi Road (along State Highway 2/Maunganui Road and towards Girven Road), however, ongoing delays are anticipated today and tomorrow,” says a spokesperson for the roading aency

'No alternative detour is available.

'Works are in progress to address the issue and motorists are advised to allow extra time for their travel.

'Please drive with caution through the project site, reduce your speed and follow directions provided.”

Mass traffic delays are being reported near the Bayfair roundabout.

A number of people have contacted SunLive saying traffic is "abnormally" delayed on the Matapihi side of the roundabout.

One person says the traffic is all the way down Russley Drive "moving very, very slowly".

Another caller backs up these claims, saying there is long traffic delays on Matapihi Road.

Another motorists says the delays may be due to a digger sitting in one lane of the roundabout, near Matapihi Road.

"It was sitting there when I came through this morning and it looks like one lane is closed."
