People travelling around the Bay of Plenty today are being warned to expect higher than normal volumes of traffic.

Many people are expected to return as the three day weekend draws to a close.

Waka Kotahi Transport Agency is predicting traffic congestion for State Highway 29, State Highway 2 between Waihi and Katikati, and State Highway 25 in the Coromandel region.

In the Lower Kaimai area, SH29 is expected to be congested in the westbound lane from 11am to 3pm.

NZTA is advising people to allow extra time in their travels.

Heavy traffic is expected to hit SH2, between Waihi and Tauranga, from midday to 4pm.

Motorists should allow extra time or consider travelling outside of their time.

Further afield on SH25, heavy traffic is expected from 11am to 3pm.

NZTA is asking people to drive to the conditions, with rain being forecast for most of the day.
