UPDATED 4.05pm: Traffic is starting to flow on State Highway 2 near Wairo Road after an earlier accident.

Police were called to a vehicle collision on SH2 at 3.30pm this afternoon, says a police spokesperson.

There appear to have been minor injuries, they say.

A SunLive reader says cars are starting to move again but is still congested.

"It took me 25 minutes to do about 100 metres."

The eyewitness stated a van and a ute appeared to be involved.

EARLIER: Lanes are blocked after a crash on State Highway 2 near Wairoa Road.

Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport agency is advising lanes are blocked and motorists should expect delays and pass the scene with care.

Google maps live traffic is showing traffic is backed up city bound on SH2 past Loop road and northbound traffic is backed up from Wairoa Road to the Cambridge Road overbridge.
