UPDATE 09:28am: Police say the road is now clear after a traffic incident which caused traffic to back up into Tauranga this morning.

A van rolled on to its side, blocking traffic, on the State Highway 29 off-ramp, near 15th Ave.

Police confirm they were called to the scene at about 7:45am after reports of a single car crash on Tamatea Arikinui Drive.

'It appears the vehicle hit a barrier and rolled on it's side,” says a Police statement. 'The sole occupant was not injured. The road was blocked for a time but appears clear now.”

The New Zealand Transport Agency is also stating that the road is now clear but that some delays may remain.

'Due to an earlier crash on the 15th Ave flyover, now cleared, expect delays eastbound on the Takatimu Dr (Toll Rd) to SH2 (City Centre) to start to ease,” says a statement from Waka Kotahi NZTA. 'Allow extra time or consider using an alternative route.”

EARLIER: A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says a vehicle has hit a barrier and rolled on the off-ramp leading from SH29 to Tamatea Arikinui Drive.

The caller says the road is blocked for traffic heading towards Tauranga.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays to their travels and to avoid the area if possible.

Another caller says traffic is very heavy in the area.

A SunLive reader has also messaged us on Facebook to say there's a crash on the Tauranga side of the SH29 toll road.

"Van on its side blocking Judea/Mount exit."
