Roadworks in Katikati causing delays

Motorists are contacting SunLive complaining of queues north of Katikati.

They say it is slow travelling between Waihi and Tauranga today.

According to reports, there is a long queue back into Katikati in one direction and out past Kauri Point Road in the other direction.

Waka Kotaki NZTA media manager says the delays are as a result of road rehabilitation work that was being carried out in the area of Tahawai Bridge and Willoughby Road, as part of the Waihi to Omokoroa safety improvements project.

'To date, two-way traffic flow has been maintained, unfortunately at times single lane activities are required and our contractor is working hard to minimise these events to reduce the impact on the travelling public”.

She says Waka Kotahi thanks motorists for their patience.

No timeframe was given as to when the repairs will be complete.

Poor planning?

Maybe it would have been better to start after summertime congestion has passed? The bigger issue is that this road needs significant upgrading and should bypass katikati. it is still largely the same as 40 years ago. A few curve corrections does not fix the issue.

Rehabilitation ?

The rehabilitation road works outside Katikati will have to be rehabilitated after the tar and stones went home attached to everybody’s vehicles today. The hold ups bad and the finishing work, shocking.

The road is a goat track. This is the main highway between the largest export port in NZ and Auckland.
