A woman involved in a crash in Tauranga is grateful to be alive.
Emergency services were called to the car and truck crash on Takitimu Drive, near The Lakes roundabout, just before 9.30am.
A vehicle carrying a family of five on holiday in Tauranga collided with a with a truck earlier this morning.
The family are on holiday from Napier and were on their way back to Rotorua when the crash happened.
Alana Hambleton, who was sitting in the back seat on the side the car was t-boned, says she was told if it was a cheaper car it would have been really bad.
It was thanks to a steel bar inside the door that she was saved.
'The newer the car the safer it is.”
She believes the car is a 2013 Ford.
While the cause of the crash is still being investigated, Alana believes their car was at fault.
The fire truck blocking the road earlier.
The family of three adults and two children, aged 10 and three, escaped with just a scrape on the man's arm.
The group are now looking at a rental car to get home.
Two ambulance, along with fire and police attended the crash.
There are no reports of any serious injuries.

Tauriko roundabouts

It's a crazy roundabout system and probably a candidate for lights like Welcome Bay. It's roulette like with traffic and I had someone drive into me too. The panel beaters said I was the seventh that week. The out of towner who hot me was confused by the business and the lanes etc and although it was his fault I felt sorry for him. Costly and I lost my car for awhile. Perhaps the traffic designers should fix problems like these before attacking Cameron road with bike lanes and bus lanes for empty buses . Oh and the Greerton traffic pinch point causing long lines of traffic . Barkes corner too for that matter all more of a priority than Cameron road.

The roads around Tauranga are such that you need to know which lane you want to be in BEFORE you get there! Terrible signage and road layout designs. That's why we have people especially out of towners changing lanes at the wrong time...eg while entering a roundabout or at the lights of certain intersections. Layout often doesn't make sense at all.
Confusion

Tauranga multi-lane roundabouts are sure confusing, even for locals. People indicate early or indicate right and go left. Probably better that they don't indicate at all, at least they won't be lying to other motorists. I would be lost of I lived out of the area and drove here for the first time. How about better signs with plenty of warning coming up to multiple roundabouts?
