UPDATE 10.28AM: Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash on State Highway 2 in Waihi.

Police received a report of the two-car crash around 9.20am, near the intersection of Dean Crescent.

One person is reported to have sustained serious injuries, says a police spokesperson.

"The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.

"Diversions are currently in place at Victoria Street and Waitawheta Road.

"Motorists are advised to expect delays. "

Diversions are as follows: Northbound traffic: turn right onto SH25 (Whangamata), left onto SH25A, left onto SH26, right onto SH2. Southbound traffic: in reverse.

State Highway 2 is blocked following a two car crash in Waihi.

Fire crews, who are currently at the scene, were notified of the crash at around 9.20am.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern communications manager Dallas Ramsay says the main highway is blocked, and fire crews are setting up a landing zone for ambulance.

She says two patients have received moderate injuries.

NZTA is reporting that there are delays in the area due to a "serious incident reported to emergency services".

People are being advised to follow the direction of police at the scene.
