UPDATE 12.53PM: A highway in the Bay of Plenty is now open following a serious crash earlier today.

Ngongotaha Road, between Ngongotaha and Rotorua, was closed after a car and truck crashed around 9.30am.

A police spokesperson says two people were reported to have sustained serious injuries injuries in the crash.

"The road is now clear and open following the earlier serious crash."

The casue of the crash under investigation.

Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on Ngongotaha Road, near Rotorua.

The crash, between a truck and a car was reported to Police just before 9.30am, says a police spokesperson.

"Initial indications are that two people have serious injuries and a helicopter is en route to assist.

"The road is currently blocked and diversions are in place."

The crash is on the stretch of highway between Ngongotaha and Rotorua.

Traffic is reported to be delayed in the area.

People are being advised to use an alternative route if possible.

Diversions are as follows: Southbound traffic use SH5 onto Paradise Valley Rd, continue onto Clayton Rd back to SH5. Northbound traffic use SH5 onto Clayton Rd, continue onto Paradise Valley Rd back to SH5.
