One person has died after a crash in the Bay of Plenty.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash on State Highway 5, Rotorua.

A police spokesperson says the crash happened near the lake View Golf Course at 11.17pm on Wednesday.

The road was closed for several hours and is reported to have re-opened about 3.45am.

"An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing."
