Police can confirm one person has died following the truck and van crash on State Highway 5, Tarawera.

A total of 10 people have been injured in the crash.

The road is closed, says a police spokesperson.

"It will be for some time while the Serious Crash Unit examine the scene.

"Motorists are asked to avoid the area."

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
