A pedestrian is critically injured after being hit by a fleeing driver in Te Puke this afternoon.

Police were notified of the incident on Lenihan Drive at 4.20pm, says a police spokesperson.

A St John spokesperson says one patient is being transported to Tauranga Hospital and has critical injuries.

"The vehicle involved left the scene," says the police spokesperson.
