State Highway 2, Thornton is closed following a serious crash this evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Matata at about 6.31pm.

A St John spokesperson says they were called to the scene near Thornton Road.

"Two Ambulances and a helicopter were sent, Curently on scene with one patient in a critical condition".

A police spokesperson says they are at the scene of a serious two-vehicle collision near the intersection of Thornton Road and Smith Road.

'One person is reported to be seriously injured.”

'The road is closed and the Serious Crash Unit will examine the scene”.

'Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area, if possible.”

A SunLive reader reports hearing the Rescue Helicopter fly overhead towards the scene.
