One person is dead following a crash in Waihi.

Police were called to the crash between a campervan and car on State Highway 2, at Parry Palm Avenue, at 2.24pm.

Two people were taken to hospital following the crash.

A police spokesperson says one person died in Waikato Hospital on Sunday afternoon.

"The person who has died had been travelling in the car at the time of the collision.

"A second occupant from the car is reported to be in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital."

The road was closed for some time to allow a scene examination to take place.

It was re-opened around 10pm.
