One person is dead following a crash on State Highway 33, near Paengaroa.
Another person is reported to be in critical condition,
Emergency services are at the scene of a serious two-vehicle crash on SH33, says a police spokesperson says.
Police were called about 5.40pm.
'The road is closed and diversions will remain in place while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene.
Police expect the road to be closed for some time.
"Motorists should continue to avoid the area."
