State Highway 33 near Paengaroa is closed following a serious crash.

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious two-vehicle crash on SH33, a police spokesperson says.

"Police were called about 5.40pm."

'The road is closed and diversions will remain in place while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene.

'Motorists should avoid the area if possible.”

Police were unable to provide an update on the level of injuries people involved in the crash have sustained.

The NZTA is also advising motorists to avoid the area.
