Tauranga HQ hosts club rugby battle of the titans

More than just top spot in Farmlands Co-operative Baywide club rugby will be on the line this afternoon as second-placed Tauranga Sports host competition frontrunners Te Puke in a Premier 1 clash of the titans at Tauranga Domain.

Bragging rights mean a lot between the two clubs. The Jordan Cup, currently held by the city side, will also be up for grabs, further firing up the two teams who have a taste for getting their hands on silverware.

Te Puke's hard won top dog status is likely to stay safe – unless something dramatic happens in the match. They have a four point lead on the table and a healthy points differential advantage so the home side will need to win with a bonus point, and prevent the visitors taking one of their own, to overtake them.

Tauranga Sports head coach Euan Mackintosh credits his team's clinical approach for their surge up the championship round table, with three straight wins in recent weeks.

'We have been a lot more accurate with regards to the execution of our game plan,” he says.

'The general level of accuracy across all areas has gone up and the boys seem to be buying into what we are trying to achieve.”

Euan says a full 80-minute effort, something they didn't achieve last week in defeating Greerton Marist 36-24, will be essential to keep the Jordan Cup in the trophy cabinet.

'We know how physical Te Puke will be so we have to match them in that area. They have a bit of everything but certainly have a physical presence that some other teams don't. If we can put together a full 80 minutes rather than 40 it will be a huge factor in whether we can retain the cup.”

Despite his team achieving a dominant 47-27 win last week over Te Puna, who had been cruising the season unbeaten until the week before, Te Puke head coach Matt Wallis still found areas for improvement.

'Even though we won and won well against Te Puna they still exposed a lot of things we needed to work on."

Defence is top of the list for Matt. 'That has given us plenty to work on at training this week going into the game.

'Tauranga Sports are a different team again.

'They are a good set piece team and they are good at utilising the width of the field with speed. We need to be prepared for that and adjust accordingly. We want to continue to show improvement at winning the breakdown so we can get fast ball to play with and then applying set piece pressure.”

The possibility of leapfrogging Tauranga Sports into second will motivate Te Puna in their home clash with Mt Maunganui. The defending champs though, currently sitting just outside the top four on points differential behind Whakarewarewa, will be looking to fire plenty of shots of their own at Maramatanga Park.

Flying the Rotorua flag, in addition to locking down their top four playoff berth, will be top of mind for Whaka in their home encounter with Rangataua. The Maungatapu-based unit though are still in semifinal contention themselves and won't make it easy.

Greerton Marist's home clash with Rotoiti at Greerton Park is a battle of the current wooden spoon contenders, and with just two regular season rounds remaining the loser can likely kiss goodbye to any playoff hopes they may have had.

Rangiuru travel to Waimana in the Baywide women's competition tomorrow afternoon, looking to keep pace at the top of the table with Rangataua who took care of the battling Matata last night at Waipuna Park.

In the other match of the round Rotoiti and Waikite both look to keep themselves in playoff contention when they meet in a Rotorua derby.
