After a mid-table first round effort the defending champs have failed to fire in their second round campaign with two straight losses, and faced a tricky away assignment against Rotoiti.

While their comfortable 31-21 win in the sulphur city still leaves them outside the top four playoff positions it lifts them off the foot of the table and within three points of semifinal contention.

Rangataua have inherited the wooden spoon position from Mt Maunganui after falling to a 30-24 defeat to Greerton Marist.

It's the Maungatapu-based outfit's third straight second round loss leaving them with just a solitary bonus point on the table.

Third-placed Arataki boosted their competition prospects with a 50-17 demolition of Te Teko, while Rangiuru took fourth spot with a 53-8 defeat of newly-promoted Marist St Michaels.

Rangiuru put on the performance of the weekend in Baywide Premier Women's rugby destroying the hapless Matata 125-0.
