Coldest night this year

Many people woke to frosty grounds in Tauranga this morning.

Thought it was cold getting out of bed this morning – it was.

Tauranga experienced the coldest night so far this year, with an overnight low of 2.8C – which was between 6-7am.

'It was at that time just before the sun rises, a few minutes before you get the coldest temperatures,” says MetService forecaster Lisa Murray.

By comparison, tonight's overnight low is by comparison a balmy five degrees.

'Today there's a chance to warm-up with, a maximum outside temperature of 14 degrees expected.

'Get a sunny spot, the shade will be cold,” says Lisa.

The lowest overnight North Island temperature was -7, at the top of the Desert Road. The overnight low at the Waiouru Village on State Highway One was -4.

There were also low temperatures in Taranaki, with an overnight low of 1, and Hawera recording zero.

'It's the coldest so far this year and it's been fairly mild, so people are feeling it,” says Lisa.

Northland was down to single digits overnight with 4C, but the real toe biting temperatures overnight were in the South Island

South Island temperatures were also toe-biting overnight with -4 recorded at Lake Tekapo, -6 at Pukaki, and -5 at Alexandra.

...for those at Scott Base, Antarctica (yes ''part'' of NZ) with temp -26.4 but with windchill -41! The actual temperature is relatively ''warm'' for down there.

For those that are living in bad housing, tents, cars etc.Maybe a hot coffee with sugar instead would be better for those poor buggers.Life would be pretty sad during winter for a lot of people in NZ. Roll on Summer.
