Only two road closures remain in the Coromandel region and New Zealand Transport Agency road crews are still out in force clearing debris and preparing for more heavy rain.

On Wednesday NZTA crews dealt with about 30 incidents on state highways in the Coromandel on Wednesday, with incidents ranging from major slips which brought down power lines to minor flooding.

NZTA regional performance manager Karen Boyt says the slips that came down with the heavy rain near Whangamata and Whiritoa are being cleared as quickly as possible

'It's a big job and we'd like to thank the Coromandel people for being so patient while we work to get their roads cleared.

'The crews are also still out clearing debris around the district so we'd like people to watch their speed and continue to drive carefully.”

Karen says the NZTA are working closely with Civil Defence and keeping an eye on the weather forecasts.

'We know that there is more heavy rain forecast to fall on the Coromandel for Friday and over the weekend so we will have our crews in a state of readiness should more slips and flooding occur.”

STATE HIGHWAY 25 CLOSURES:

Whangamata

SH25 is closed in both directions from Harry Watt Road to Port Road due to a number of large slips. One lane is open for emergency access only because of safety concerns.

Detours are in place, with northbound traffic being diverted down Port Road, Hetherington Road and Harry Watt Road, and in reverse for southbound traffic.

The road is estimated to be reopened by 5pm on Friday, March 10.

Whiritoa

SH25 is closed in both directions due to a number of large slips.

There is no detour route, meaning Whiritoa is effectively cut off.

The road is estimated to be reopened by 5pm on Friday, March 10.
