Heavy rains to ease today

A severe weather warning which has been in place for most of this week has been lifted by the MetService.

While more rain is expected this morning, the risk of significant widespread heavy rain has passed and is likely to ease around midday.

'A low to the northeast of the North Island continues to bring rain to the upper North Island, especially Coromandel Peninsula. However, rainfall accumulations are no longer expected to meet warning criteria, and the warning for Coromandel Peninsula has been lifted,” says the MetService.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council advises there are currently no local road closures, but a slip has been reported on Whangapoua Road, State Highway 25, but it's still passable.

While the New Zealand Transport Agency is also warning motorists a stop/go operation in place following an underslip on SH25 on the Thames Coast near Kereta south of Coromandel township. Delays are expected and motorists are being asked to avoid the area.

To report any incidents call the Thames-Coromandel District Council's 24-hour contact centre on 07 868 0200.

The council will also be providing regular updates on its Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/ThamesCoromandelDistrictCouncil
