Police warn drivers to drive safe

Police are warning motorists to take care on the roads as snow is expected to fall on the Desert Road, State Highway 1 tonight.

The MetService has issued a snowfall warning for the Desert Road tonight and early tomorrow morning saying snow could accumulate up to and between 10 to 15cm.

Police are urging motorists to take care on the roads as weather conditions are less than ideal in some areas.

Drivers are reminded to ensure they drive to the conditions, reduce their speed where necessary and increase their following distances.

When driving in winter conditions, Police also advise motorists to allow extra time for their journey and to be aware of other road users who may not be easily seen, such as cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Motorists need to ensure they keep windscreens clean and fully defrosted, and that they take care in covered areas where there may be black ice on the roads.

Should it be up to the police to warn drivers to drive safely? That cold white stuff falling out of the sky makes the roads slippery? It always has.... as far as we know, it always will... Are people so thick these days, that they cant grasp this concept and maybe slow down and drive to the conditions without having to be warned? People should realise if the conditions are bad and they don't drive to suit the conditions, that 1/ having a car accident can hurt and kill them or others... 2/ it is not without pain on the bank balance to throw a car over an embankment or into a tree or ditch. Wake up people... If your car has no chains.... or the driver has no brains... stay at home next to the heater and do everyone a favor... especially the poor emergency service rescue personel
