Police are investigating an incident where a person who was in a serious crash near Tauranga was struck by another vehicle soon after.

Emergency services were called to the Tauranga Eastern Link on State Highway 2, early this morning, to reports of a vehicle crashing and flipping upside down.

A Fire Service spokesperson told SunLive this morning, a person was found at the scene injured and lying on the ground.

'It appears the person may have left the vehicle and been hit by another vehicle.”

It wasn't immediately clear whether the person had been thrown from the crashed car or had climbed from the wreck themselves.

The person was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.

A police spokesperson says police would like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area just after midnight and witnessed the incident. Investigations are continuing.
