Power cuts as storm bears down

Power outages and slips are being reported in the Western Bay of Plenty as the region is warned to prepare for more bad weather today.

Power is out in Te Puke this morning after reports of power lines down on No.3 Road.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says a tree has come down causing the power lines to come down as well.

Powerco reports the power went out in the area around 8.29am, and says severe weather conditions are the cause of the outage.

The power company is estimating to have the power back on around 12pm.

There are also reports of a slip on State Highway 29, near the Kaimai Range.

The road remains open, but motorists are advised to drive with care.

A truck crash is also blocking the southbound lane of SH2, near Aongatete. Police are working to clear the scene, and ask people to expect delays

The MetService says thunderstorms are possible over the Western Bay of Plenty today as rain bands associated with the passing storm go over.

'There is a possibility with that as it moves over and with the heating of the day that you could get some decent thunderstorms and this would give you some really localised downpours as well,” says meteorologist Lisa Murray.

'It's going to continue into the afternoon. It's coming though in bands. If you have a look at the radar on our website you can actually see the bands go through.”

The really muggy, really warm moisture laden air is being brought down from the tropics by the low pressure systems associated with the system.

'They are going to move off today, tomorrow. Saturday looks pretty good. Sunday for you guys should be fine.”

Any remaining rain should clear Friday morning.

If you ring Asplund they will come out and cut any overhanging limbs and will charge the costs back to the power company. They will only do this once - but not many people are aware of this service. They were easy to deal with and didn't take long to come out and sort out any issues. - Just putting it out there. Try contacting them: 0800 4 ASPLUNDH (0800 4 277 583)
