A woman is in Whakatane Hospital after the truck she was driving rolled in the Waioeka Gorge near Opotiki this afternoon.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter flew to the area to help transport the 61-year-old to hospital.

However, low cloud prevented the crew from landing at the site and so the woman, with lower back injuries from the crash was taken by ambulance to the Opotiki airport and was then taken via helicopter to Whakatane Hospital.

It is understood the woman is in a stable condition.
