Crash brings down lines

Welcome Bay Road is expected to reopen at about 6.30pm following a car crash that brought a power lines pole down across the road.

Witnesses say three men in a car crashed into the power pole near Ngapeke Road at about 3.30pm.

Children had to stay inside a school bus after a car crash brought down a power pole on Welcome Bay Road. See video interview below with witness to the incident Karen van der Zalm.

The closure is only in place near Ngapeke Road. Those travelling up to that point can still drive on Welcome Bay Road.

One of the passengers sustained significant injuries. His face was seen covered in blood as they left the crash scene.

Police say the men fled, but were found shortly after.

The police traffic alcohol group is now investigating the crash and is questioning the men.

A group of children travelling on a school bus were caught up in the road closure.

The bus was near the crash scene when the power pole came down.

All of those onboard had to stay inside for at least 30 minutes until emergency services were confident live wires were not a risk.

The children were evacuated from the bus and had to find alternative transport.
