Welcome Bay Road is blocked to traffic travelling in both directions after a car hit a power pole there about 200m from Ngapeke Road.
The 40,000 volt live lines are across the road and workers at the scene, who have blocked it off, say it will be at least 40 minutes before they can allow motorists to pass.
Workers are on the scene attempting to make safe the downed power lines.
Police are at the scene of the crash, but the vehicle which struck the pole is not. They are searching for it as its driver drove off after the incident.

No way I'd bicycle along any road in Tauranga that requires me to share the road with cars when there's idiots like THAT driving around on them!!!! More dedicated cycle paths I say!! "More cycle paths and less psychopaths!!!!!!!!!"

Welcome bay road is a heavily used road for cyclists I was nearly cleaned out by an out of control car in that very corner in the photo. That road should be made safer for cyclists.

was there just after it happened and saw the fleeing car..they had just pulled over on the next corner-a man was lying down in the back seat covered in blood and the others were frantically running around trying to fix the car by looks of things. I called 111 and reported it to the police.
cycle paths?

Its a narrow country road-no footpaths no kerb and channeling. Where are they supposed to put a cycle path? Less cyclists on unsuitable roads is more the point.

Yes, I agree. Tried sharing welcome Bay Road with cyclists several weeks ago and never again. Stop grizzling and start paying a road user charge and then you may get some sympathy!!! In the meantime, pedal down a road that's wide enough for two bikes and two cars with the permitted passing width of 1.5m!
