Young Chiefs seek revenge

The Chiefs Development side will be hoping a successful trip to Hong Kong proves the catalyst to toppling their Hurricanes counterparts.

Tonight the two sides square off in Masterton at 7.30pm with the Chiefs looking to reverse their 28-18 score line from their last encounter in Te Kuiti in March.

The match will be played on an artificial turf at the new Trust House Memorial Park and will be the main event in an opening evening which features a festival of rugby and football.

This is the sixth match for the Chiefs and is hot on the heels of their tour of Hong Kong to initiate a new partnership between the Chiefs Super Rugby club and the Hong Kong Rugby Union.

In total, five Bay of Plenty players have been included in today's line-up starting with Te Puke prop Aiden Ross and Mount Maunganui loose forward Matt Axtens in the forwards.

In the backs, the Te Puke 9/10 combination of Jono Kitto and Dan Hollinshead is given the chance to unleash a backline brimming with size and power in the likes of Cardiff Vaega and Seta Tamanivalu.

Te Puna's Ti Ahe Toma has been included on bench.

While in Hong Kong the side undertook four joint training sessions and played a match with the Hong Kong national squad to assist their preparation for their upcoming test matches against South Korea and Japan.

This was all carried out with a view to Hong Kong Rugby's goal of qualifying for the World Cup in 2019 in Japan.

The match was played at the Hong Kong Football Club ground in the middle of the Happy Valley racecourse, resulting in a close fought 28 – 14 win for the Chiefs.

Played in steady rain, Hong Kong scored first with a converted try from a lineout maul before the Chiefs replied with two well-constructed tries to visiting Kobelco Steelers loose forward Ryuta Yasui and young Waikato fullback/wing Shaun Stevenson.

Both were converted by Waikato first five-eighth Bryn Gatland.

Hong Kong scored a try from a ruck close to the line and converted just before the break making the half-time score 14-14.

The match remained closely contested through the second half until the Chiefs scored two converted tries in the last ten minutes.

The Bay's Dan Hollinshead made a strong line break and a 40m run to score before half-back Toma scored from a close range quick tap, with Hollinshead converting both tries for the final score of 28-14.

The Chiefs Development squad, together with the Hong Kong Rugby Union, undertook popular community engagement coaching sessions with local junior players.

After tonight's match the Chiefs Development will play the New Zealand U20s on May 25 in Tauranga as part of their preparation for the Junior World Cup.
