Drive to survive this weekend

Waikato Police are urging all motorists to show restraint on the roads and drive to the conditions this weekend.

District Road Policing Manager Inspector Freda Grace says this Anzac weekend many Kiwis will come together to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who served in times of conflict.

'As a result of the sacrifice of these men and women the country has a day off to reflect on what they fought for on our behalf,” says Freda. 'Those people died so we could enjoy things like freedom of movement.

'That freedom of movement includes the expectation that we should be safe on our roads.

'With this year seeing the first Monday-ization of an Anzac Day falling on a Saturday, we are provided a long weekend.”

Freda believes the most fitting way to observe the day would be for all those people transiting Waikato roads this holiday weekend to be in the same position to do so next year.

'These veterans laid down their lives so we could be safe- that's safe no matter where we are on the roads, water or skies of this very special country that they provided for us.

'So this holiday weekend be mindful of the large numbers of people assembling early tomorrow morning right across the Waikato for the Dawn Services and let's make this Anzac weekend a crash free one to salute their efforts.”
