You'd think amateur photographer Seng Kit would snap up a career in photography after claiming a top prize in an inaugural photo competition – but he's just keeping it as a hobby.
The 28-year-old photographer only moved to the Bay of Plenty around three months ago, but has snapped the second-best picture of the region in the recent Plenty for Everyone competition.
‘The Perfect Catch' by Seng Kit.
But Seng's sticking to his day job in the IT department at BOP District Health Board.
'I don't think it will bring enough bread and bacon to the table,” says Seng.
'I'm just happy to do it for the fun of it to be honest.”
He pressed the shutter on his top shot of two men fishing off the rocks in Mount Maunganui at sunset just a day before the competition closed.
Seng gets a Canon Printer PIXMA MG5560, while the two men in the picture receive a few seconds of fame when they go on display in the Photographic Society of New Zealand's 63rd annual Canon National Photographic Exhibition at Tauranga Racecourse next month.
'If they do see it they might be quite surprised,” adds Seng. It's the first time one of Seng's photographs will be on public display, and he's only been snapping pics on his Sony a7R for a year and a half.
'I love it,” admits Seng. 'It's certainly one of my passions.”
Jay Drew won the competition with his photograph entitled ‘Beach Races'. Jay and Seng will be awarded their prizes at the PSNZ Canon National Photographic Exhibition on May 1.
All of the accepted images will be screened at the exhibition, which is open to public in the Sir Tristram Room at Tauranga Racecourse from 5pm to 7.30pm on May 1 – and from 10.30am to 3pm on May 2. Admission is $2 or free with the TECT Card.
