A star-studded New Zealand line up has signed up to come to Tauranga and give their support to Sir Colin ‘Pine Tree' Meads.
A tribute dinner is being organised to honour the All Blacks great at the ASB Arena in July, which the organisers are calling an ‘unprecedented' event for the city.
Sir Colin ‘Pine Tree' Meads.
The event is aptly titled ‘A Tribute to Sir Colin Meads'.
It is in recognition of the amount of support Sir Colin has given to the Tauranga and Bay of Plenty communities.
Events Innovated, who are organising the event, thought it was about time there was a celebration where the region could pay their thanks and respects to the Kiwi icon.
Some very prominent people agreed, and the guest list lining up to pay tribute to Meads is impressive.
All-time greats, renowned broadcasters and admired personalities such as Sir Brian Lochore, Andrew Mehrtens, Keith Quinn, Jamie Mackay, Dick Tayler, Peter Williams and Peter ‘Blackie' Blackwell will share their memories, anecdotes and stories in a celebration of his life and career.
Events Innovated director, Heath Ingham, says everyone's interest and enthusiasm for the event speaks volumes of Meads.
'Everyone we've talked to about this event has jumped on board straight away,” explains Heath. 'Hands down, they've instantly said yes, no questions.
'This is the standing that Sir Colin has. He's hugely respected and one of our greatest living legends.
'Mehrtens is coming across from Australia for it. We've got very special guests from all around the country coming and invites have gone out to some really high profile people. 'This is the level of celebration Meads deserves.”
Guests will enjoy fine food, wine, entertainment and witness the guest speakers give their gratitude, respect and admiration to Sir Colin.
Ingham says it is a way to say thanks to someone who has given a lot to the region.
'The night is to primarily give thanks to a man who has supported our region so much,” adds Heath.
'I've seen it first hand for many years at the annual CIB Police Auction. He's helped many organisations and charities here.
'He's always giving his time for nothing in return. And let's not forget he's one of our greatest sporting heroes ever.
'He is one very extraordinary kiwi bloke who is an amazing icon for our country and it's about time we said thanks. It's going to be an amazing and very special night.”
The night will feature renowned broadcaster Peter Williams acting as MC and interviewing Sir Colin, as well as providing a question and answer session with the audience.
There will also be an auction in support of Sir Colin's favourite charities, featuring exclusive Meads memorabilia
The event will be held on Friday, July 31, at ASB Arena in Tauranga. Tables of 10 range in price from $1390 to $3190 for VIP options. Single seats are available for $139.
All tables and tickets can be purchased from: www.sircolin.co.nz, or email: [email protected]

another ex AB wants another pay day

How many times do we have to hear about ex-all blacks? Apart from pioneering fence post holes, what else has he done? How about the unsung hero's in the health industry that save lives? The people that dedicate their lives to helping others...often with minimal remuneration? I am tired of ex all blacks being wheeled out for another pay day. I met him once and was disappointed with his "don't you know who I am?" attitude.

All I can say about your comment is: "get a life". Colin has done much more than rugby etc, he has attended and been involved in many charitable events in the past many years and that has helped many Kiwis.

Just to correct you - Sir Colin has helped out numerous charities and organisations around NZ for nothing in return. He doesn't assist charities for your so-called "pay day". He continually gives his time, name and support to many organisations for no remuneration. Through these efforts he has effectively helped many people, especially with his decades of work for the IHC where he has helped raise millions of dollars. He has helped many organisations in Tauranga and is one of the most generous and humble sporting icons that you'll find.

a great night out.
not impressed

Sorry to upset you all, but the arrogance of the "don't you know who I am?" brigade will always fail to win me over. And excelling in a sport largely ignored by the rest of planet earth is not really that impressive either.
To Captain 'Sensible'?????

Firstly Captain, I would like to address you by name, but obviously you are too gutless and hiding behind 'sensible'. I have had the privelege of knowing this legend for 46 years. He and his wife would have to be the most giving, humble pair I know! The Legend does so much for so many and it is all done from the heart for no monetry gain. I have never been so angry in all my life for what you have said - and wonder just what sort of human being you are. Pinetree you deserve this night - you are a Living Legend. Sandy Snowdon
To Captain dispensable!

If you choose to ignore or have not taken the trouble to research the achievements made by Sir Colin throughout both his career in Rugby and his remarkable work afterwards which contributed to his 'Knighthood'then you are what most people suspect which is narrow minded ....

Colin Meads is an achiever at the highest level as are many other NZ sporting legends. Any person that reaches the top in their field regardless of how others see that achievement has done OK in my book. On top of that this guy has done a lot that most of us do not know about as he does not advertise the contributions he makes. I see CM as a role model in hard work and honesty and wish him a great night with the many well wishers that will attend
uninformed howls

Say what you like, but his arrogance was noted by myself, and like you lot, I am entitled to make up my own mind. I have seen a side that maybe you haven't. Not that long ago, an MP was forced to resign because of his arrogance and his "don't you know who I am" attitude towards a waiter. Is it acceptable for an ex all black to do the same? Of course, it is only my word against anyone else's. I do accept he has done charity work, but arrogance is an ugly trait... as is the lame uninformed attempts at insulting me.
captain unremarkable!

Give it a rest and let this great man enjoy his day, although I doubt whether the ramblings of an idiot would stop him!
