There are reports a driver has absconded from the scene of a car crash on State Highway 2 near Waihi overnight.
Emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident near the Trig Rd intersection to find a crashed car with the keys in the ignition but the driver nowhere in sight.
Fairfax reports Waihi firefighters received reports of the car crash on Sunday evening at about 9.30pm.
When fire crews arrived they discovered the abandoned car crashed outside the metal dump on the edge of the highway.
The car, described as a Toyota, was on its wheels with a flat tyre and keys in the ignition.
Firefighters managed to start the vehicle and moved it from the road into the metal dump.
Conditions at the time of the crash are said to have been wet and rainy.
Waihi Fire Chief Moe Stevens planned to take the keys and other items in the car to Waihi Police station today, reports Fairfax.
