Backdoor GromBash this weekend

New Zealand's top junior surfers will be battling it out on the waves at The Backdoor GromBash in Raglan this weekend.

It will be the last event before the winter months set in and for the first time this year World Surf League campaigner Ella Williams of Whanagamata will get a chance to compete in a domestic event.

After a busy summer chasing WSL Qualifying Series points, Williams has a brief break from international events and opted to compete at the GromBash in the build up to events offshore.

Williams will compete in the Under 20 Girls Division against one of the biggest fields of surfers the junior events have seen this year.

She will be joined in Raglan by fellow Whangamata surfers Dune Kennings in the Under 20 men's category, and Dylan Preston in the Under 14 Men's category.

This weekend's conditions are expected to be small on Saturday morning but building throughout the day in to Sunday, with excellent conditions forecast for the final day of the event.

Backdoor will bring in their mobile skate park and set it up in the car park. They will also provide free breakfast for all the competitors at the event on both days.

If conditions permit, Today will see an impromptu speed surfing event which is open to every surfer.

Heats will be ten minutes, best one wave, three waves max. The top six heat scores from all of the heats will then qualify for the finals. The event kicks off at 2pm.
