Car plunges 30m off cliff

A 19-year-old man has suffered serious injuries after his car plunged 30 metres off a bank onto rocks at Oamaru Bay, north of Coromandel.

Reports say the man, and sole occupant of the vehicle, was driving on Colville Rd when he lost control and went over the cliff, rolling several times before landing the right way up on rocks this morning.

The crash took place at about 10.30am, with the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter called in soon after to rescue the man.

Coromandel firefighters were called to help free the man from the vehicle. He had suffered cuts to the back of his neck, bruises and grazes.

The 19-year-old was flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.
