Thrill as home sells for $725,000

A Te Puna couple's handy DIY skills have helped their daughter and her husband net a $143,500 profit on national TV.

For 10 weeks Al and Anne Gourley, their daughter Amy Kim and her husband Matt Kim have been renovating a three-bedroomed Avondale house as part of the reality television property show Our First Home.

The home (see video below) is one of three houses involved in the TV show and was the first to go under the hammer at a live auction last night.

The final sale price of $725,000 saw the Gourley family add 24.87 per cent of its value to their property, banking a healthy $143,500 profit and setting an 'impressive” benchmark for the other families, says TVNZ head of content Jeff Latch.

'We really want all the families to benefit from their hard work, so it's great to see it's paid off so well for the Gourleys,” adds Jeff.

'It's an incredible start to Our First Home's Live Auction Week, and the Gourleys have certainly thrown down the gauntlet to the other families.”

The other two homes will be auctioned tonight and tomorrow.

The Gourleys say they are thrilled with the result.

'We're incredibly blown away,” say the family. 'We felt the house was worth it and are glad that buyers have agreed.

'We are really humbled by their confidence; we hope we've shown that you can take an ordinary bungalow and turn it into something special.”

The family says they have had amazing support up and down the country and want to thank everybody who supported them.

The family that makes the biggest percentage gain at auction will take home the additional $100,000 prize for their kid's first house deposit.

Tonight, the Schreuder family will watch as their three-bedroom home in Titirangi goes under the hammer.

The final home to go to auction will be the Wardlaw's Te Atatu property on Tuesday night, when the winner of the $100,000 prize money will also be announced.

*Our First Home's Live Auction Week continues on Monday and Tuesday at 7.30pm on TV One.

the profit is not tax free. I'd imagine this will be the accountant's nightmare - 4 people no income for 10 weeks, all the driving, petrol, some items were won/donated etc. The show 'took' off 50K. We just heard today that Auckland's property prices are increasing at a rate of 1000pw. so ten weeks, 10 000. Suddenly all of that hard work doesn't seem so well paid, interest on the loan (the contestants purchased the properties themselves, not the TV show), auction fees, etc etc. But it is the show like this one that make people think it's easy money and try to replicate the 'huge' easy profits...
