Longboarders take to Papamoa waves

The rescheduled 2015 Coast Papamoa Beach New Zealand Longboard and SUP Open is taking place at Papamoa Beach this weekend after having been postponed earlier in the year due to a lack of swell.

The event has brought together longboard and stand up paddleboard surfers from around New Zealand eyeing wins across the eight divisions contested over the two days.

This is the second year the Open has been held with the 2014 event experiencing phenomenal conditions at Papamoa Beach. Contest director Ben Kennings says there are about 70 entries in the competition.

'We have men's longboard, women's longboard, stand-up paddleboard, and over 40s. We also have a stand-up paddleboard race and an expression session as well.

'The conditions are pretty good today.”

Ben says it was almost flat yesterday and today it is like a 1m swell.

'It's a nice, sunny day with offshore winds. They locals are going pretty good. Owen Barnes, from Mount Maunganui, won the semi-final and he is now into the final of the over 40s.

'Owen was in the open as well and he was doing really well.”
