Western Bay of Plenty police breath tested 4000 motorists between Thursday night and Saturday night, nabbed 38 drink drivers.
File picture.
About 22 drink drivers were caught on Thursday night, five on Friday night and 11 on Saturday.
Sergeant Mike Owen says 1800 motorists were tested on Saturday night, at various locations around the Western Bay of Plenty.
'To be honest, you wonder why people are continuing to do it (drink and drive).”
'They know they are in no fit state.”
In the build-up to Christmas and New Year, police will be out in force, Mike says.
'If people choose to drink and drive, there's a high chance of getting caught.
'And the public are ringing up more and more when they see bad driving.”
There were seven crashes in the Western Bay of Plenty between 4pm on Friday and 8am on Monday.
Six of those crashes were non-injury and one resulted in a mild injury.

Good on those people who call the Police when they see erratic or bad driving. I used to do the same thing in Aussie and it worked a treat! I still reckon that anyone caught over the limit, should have to forfeit the vehicle they are in control of regardless of who owns it. This would be a massive incentive for brainless idiots to stop and think before they took to the roads and risked murdering some innocent victims.
Over the top

Bryceh, you and your ilk are just small minded morons. You have no right to abuse people and make dumb assumptions without actual looking out the facts. Are you really advocating all these draconian measures on people who have been snapped on a law that convicts people based on what they might do? Remember none of these people have crashed, hurt, or maimed anyone and there is absolutely no proof whatever that they would. In fact figures show that of the 40% or so of drivers that will have a DIC conviction by the time they are 40 less than 1% will ever be involved in a drink related accident. Your assumption that if someone is over the limit they will automatically kill someone is asinine. Whilst the Police and the Government are right to be concerned about drinking and driving and there is good argument that drink drivers who do have accidents and do harm should pay dearly for that. However at any one time there are about 1-2% of drivers on our roads are over the limit and less than 1% of those are likely to cause carnage and frankly no amount of legislation will change some mindsets. What concerns me most is the fact that only some 10% of deaths on our roads can be directly attributed to drinking or speed. That means that huge resources and budget are being spent on 10% of the problem and the other 90% is being practically ignored. And lets not forget that twice as many people have died in Police chases this year than have died in alcohol fuelled accidents in the BoP. So lets just back off the witch hunts and remember that there are tens of thousands of responsible drinking drivers out there
Drink Driving

Yes Kaz I am But you like many do good dreamers are unaware that that indecent may not be over. And you have no idea who I am or the facts involved or that I have been driving for over 50 years on NZ roads and never had an accident nor harmed any one, so before you assume I have the potential to harm people get your facts right and stop assuming that everything you read on the Police spin is correct. And by the way, 50 odd years ago when I was an apprentice I was, like other apprentices in the town rostered on the after hours wrecker and from a very young age I was well aware of the carnage caused on our roads at first hand. So don't make moronic assumptions and do your homework, find out the facts as I have done then make constructive comment other than the emotion filled garbage you espouse. The people who should'nt be on the road are the ones who stupidly believe that if they simply do as they are told they will be OK and stop driving proactively. And I suspect you are one of those, Or a Cop

Chudleigh, do you re read your comments before you hit send! WBOP Police do a fantastic job keeping our roads safe. They are not locking people up for what they might do. They do it for breaking the law. Drinking and driving is breaking the law, as is speeding. You are correct, those people caught DIC often are not involved in accidents, because the Police take them off the road while they are under the influence and potentially dangerous, therefore no risk of them causing carnage. I say, good on you WBOP Police, keep up the good work and please try harder to apprehend Chudleigh.
Bloody Pathetic

Drove home from Mt on Saturday night at 1.30am. Van full of pissed people. Not one cop in sight from when we left the pub until when we arrived at our destination south of Te Puke. OK, we had a sober driver but where is the proactive policing they have been on about. Could of easily been a driver well over the limit and would have got away with it if we managed to get home without crashing. (took all the main roads too!)

Yes I do re read and I am happy with the fact I say what I believe and I'm not afraid to put my name to it. You are the one who has selective reading. I said that the law that they (DD's) break has penalties based on what they might do and that is correct. And no, you're wrong again assuming the roads are safer because those drivers are off the road, because they are off the road generally for only 6 months. Read the statement it says that those people statistically will not have a drink drive accident throughout their driving lives. In other words they never were a huge danger to others. These are factual statistics and the sooner we get the emotional rubbish out of this argument the sooner we will begin to save lives. Yes, the Police do do a good job particularly at revenue collecting and showing a strong presence on our roads. But the road toll is not going down so obviously they are targeting the wrong areas. The number of Police committed to the drink drive campaign last weekend in my opinion was a total waste of resources for a cost benefit ratio of only one percent. And encouraging the police to apprehend me because you do not agree with my opinion is a typical anarchist position. This is a free country last time I looked or perhaps your signature should be War1943 and your name is probably Hitler or Stalin. I'm sure that if I ever break the law I'll be snapped like anyone else so if you have so much faith in the Police, leave it to them, unless you are one of them!
