Papamoa DJ taking on the world

It was the promise of free chocolate that originally enticed Darius Walker, a.k.a Boy Faith, into the world of deejaying.

'Back in 2011, a church I used to attend were throwing a party, they said to me ‘we'll give you some chocolate if you deejay it' – I didn't even know how to deejay then, but hey, free chocolate.”

From that experience the Papamoa College student was instantly hooked and it eventually inspired the now 15-year-old to start making his own music.

Darius has come a long way since that party, so much so that this year he signed a three-year contract with Florida based international record label Del Sol Ltd.

He says the contract came about after he entered a remix competition run by the record label during the last school holidays.

'I found the competition on a remix website and Del Sol were asking for people to remix the song Carpets by Amp Decay.

'The label originally listened to the remix and really liked it, then they listened to all my other tracks and really digged those too which is why they wanted to sign me.

'When I learned I got a record contract with them I just went ‘woah'. Major opportunities opened up for me and I was ecstatic.”

For his remix he 'flipped the track upside down and completely changed it”, which included writing new chords for the track. The only elements from the original he kept were a few of the effects.

'I love using quite a lot of sounds in my music and Del Sol said they liked the way I used a vast array of elements in my remix.”

As part of his three-year contract Del Sol will release any new singles to a worldwide audience, plus he has the option to sign with a bigger label show should one show interest in his music.

The stage name ‘Boy Faith' is a nod to Darius' Christian faith, which has had a huge influence on his life.

He describes his music as fundamentally Electronic, and cites ‘Chillstep' as his favourite style within the broad genre, saying it's 'a really kicked back kind of sound.”

'My plan is to release a single around the end of July and maybe an album towards the end of the year. I think it will be a lot of different genres, well that's the plan.”
