Williamson scoops top awards

Kane Williamson's blistering summer has been recognised after the Bay of Plenty batsman scooped Player of the Year awards across all three formats at the New Zealand Cricket Awards in Auckland.

The 24-year-old Tauranga cricketer stood supreme among his peers last night, winning the Redpath Cup (batting), the ANZ Twenty20 International Player of the Year, the ANZ ODI Player of the Year and the ANZ Test Player of the Year.

In the 2014/15 season Williamson has notched up three Test centuries and the highest score of his Test career - a remarkable 241 not-out against Sri Lanka at the Basin Reserve.

He was one of three New Zealanders included in the ICC Test team of the year.

Along the way he also scored three ODI centuries including one as captain in the United Arab Emirates, to see the Blackcaps home for a series win over Pakistan.

And how could anyone forget the incredible six he smashed back over Pat Cummins' head in the final over to edge past Australia in their World Cup pool match at Eden Park – epitomising his calm nature.

Speaking after the awards, Williamson admits to feeling both 'fortunate and bad” after picking up the gongs given the immense buy-in from all of the players on the team's culture.

'An award like that [Player of the Year] is about contributing to the team,” he says.

'The way Brendon [McCullum] and Hess [coach Mike Hesson] lead the side and created that culture was very much what everyone had in their minds - to go out to play their role and do as well as they could for the team. I think they did that.

'It's certainly evolved from when I first started you can see the changes. There is no coincidence the results have certainly changed.”

Williamson believes the side is playing the exciting brand of cricket they set out to achieve and while they didn't go all the way in the World Cup, it was a fantastic ride nonetheless.

Bay of Plenty teammate and close friend Trent Boult was awarded the Winsor Cup for First Class bowling after coming of age as an accomplished swing bowler.

Well known for his exploits with the red ball, Boult became the New Zealand record holder for the most wickets taken at a World Cup with 22 scalps. This surpassed Geoff Allott's record of 20 wickets in 1999.

Boult was awarded the Man of the Match twice during the World Cup for his performances against Scotland, and his career best figures of 5-27 against Australia in pool play.

Earlier in the year, he brought up his 100th Test wicket.
