Petition reaches parliament

A 10-year-old boy who lost his father in the same crash that claimed the life of Tauranga man Dennis Pedersen has taken his petition for a law change regarding foreign drivers on New Zealand's roads to parliament.

Sean Roberts travelled from Geraldine in South Canterbury to Wellington today to speak with a select community about his petition for stricter rules governing foreign drivers.

Deno was a well-known and much-loved member of the community.

Sean's father Grant and Dennis, also known as Deno, were killed in a crash on Lindis Pass on State Highway 8 on November 26, 2012.

Deno, a member of the Filthy Few Motorcycle Club, and Grant were riding as part of a group returning from the Burt Munro Challenge in Invercargill when he and South Canterbury Road Knight Grant collided with a southbound Nissan near Goodger Road.

The car was being driven by Chinese tourist Kejia Zheng, who had only has a few weeks' experience behind the wheel and lost control of the rented vehicle.

A coroner's inquest into the men's death ruled the driver only had one month's driving experience before she ventured on to New Zealand's roads.

She was convicted on two counts of careless driving causing death and sentenced to two years' disqualification from driving and ordered to pay $10,000 emotional harm.

A police investigation found the 20-year-old tourist had crossed the centreline and collided with the oncoming motorcyclists.

Since the accident, Sean has been gathering signatures for a petition for stricter rules.

The petition, signed by nearly 37,000 people across the world, calls for visitors to sit a test before getting behind the wheel.

'I would like to see a change - a test before they drive on our roads,” says Sean.

'I want to ask if there can be a change, and why can't they (foreign drivers) be made to sit a test before driving in New Zealand?

'Nobody deserves to go through what I have been through. If things don't change people will keep getting hurt.”

MPs on the select committee congratulated Sean for drawing attention to the issue.

Either those 37000 people signing the petition never travel overseas, or they don't mind sitting a test overseas before hiring a car/motorcycle. So much for international conventions. Get with the programme.
